The CrossFit Open is for you if you’re a competitive athlete or just starting out. It’s a mile marker in your journey, a communal experience, a motivational tool and a ton of fun.
Here are some perspectives on participating in the Open:
- From our Head Coach Noah LaPorte
- From CrossFit.com covering how you can view the open if you are not elite
- From Goose Island CrossFit friend and regional athlete Jenni Hartman
- From Goose Island CrossFit friend and fellow coach Rachel Gitels
I personally always waffle about signing up every year because I’m not a great athlete, and I know I will be doing the workouts regardless. However, last year I finally bit the bullet and officially signed up, and it added an extra level of accountability and drive that I needed to go the extra mile in the workouts.
Here’s how things will go at Goose Island during the Open:
For the next 5 weeks, every Thursday (beginning tomorrow, February 26) at 7pm, we will be hanging out in the lounge to watch the Open announcement. CrossFit will announce what the Open workout for the week is. Once the workout is revealed, two top level athletes will be the first to demonstrate and compete in the workout. It’s a lot of fun, and you should come hang out.
On Friday, the Open WOD will be scheduled as our normal workout so everyone will get a chance to compete.
This year, for the first time you have the option to complete the workouts in the RXed or Scaled divisions. Obviously, check with your coach on the day of the workout to see what he advises, but as a general rule, if you think you can complete one rep of each movement try to complete it RX. The Open is an opportunity to push yourself and see what you are capable of doing. Pretty much every CrossFitter in the world will be pushing themselves in some way with these workouts, so you’ll be in good company.
If you cannot make any of the normal Friday workouts, check with your coach to see when you can make it up before Monday afternoon.
The CrossFit Open is an amazing experience, but you definitely get out what you put in, so invest in the moment and push yourself!
