The Goose Island Member Garden

The Sub Irrigated Planter

This coming Saturday at 2pm, we will start our community garden! All members are free to attend and participate. We will teach you how to make a sub irrigated planter. You can make the planter and leave it at the gym, or you can take it home. We will also provide instructions for how to make it to anyone who cannot make the event.

What Is It?

The Sub Irrigated Planter is a cheap and easy do-it-yourself planter that will self water your plants through the season and protect against over watering.

What You'll Need to Bring

We will bring a lot of the things you will need. For now let's focus on what you will need for your planters.

Two Food Grade Five Gallon Buckets

These will be key and are cheap. They can be found new at Home Depot for around $3 dollars each. Alternatively, grocery stores often have stacks of food grade 5 gallon buckets and will give you some if you ask. You will need two buckets for every planter you want to make.

A Utility Knife

It will help you out a lot. Also, don't pay more than $5 for one... no matter how fancy it looks.

A Two Foot Length of 1 Inch PVC Piping And A Cap

The PVC Pipe is going to allow you to water your plant without pouring it directly on the soil. This will ensure that your plants stay adequately hydrated without over watering. You can buy pre-cut 2 foot lengths of 1 inch pipe at Home Depot. The cap will prevent misquotes from accessing the water.

One Cubic Foot Potting Mix (Not Soil)

The Potting Mix is really important. Because the soil is going to be constantly watered you want the mix to be able to breathe. Part of the construction will allow the soil to aerate and breathe.  The Potting Mix will let the roots flow freely and allow the plant to get  perfect hydration.

We Will Supply Everything Else
