It's almost Open season!

What is the CrossFit Open?

For those of you who don’t know, the CrossFit Open is a series of 5 weeks where the entire CrossFit community competes in the same weekly workout. Each week a new workout is announced, and each week hundreds of thousands of people participate. For the most advanced athletes, the Open is the first step towards qualifying for the International CrossFit Games, which take place in July. For everyone else, the Open gives you the opportunity to push yourself a little more and see where you end up.

Whether you’re competitive or not, whether you’ve been doing this for years or days, the CrossFit Open is an experience you won’t forget.

When Is the CrossFit Open?

The Open kicks off February 25 and runs through March 28

16.2: March 3 - 7

16.3: March 10 - 14

16.4 March 17 - 21

16.5 March 24 – 28

 

What will the Open will look like at Goose Island CrossFit

Thursday Announcement

On Thursdays, classes will run as usual, but if you’re interested, we’ll be streaming the live announcement and demonstration of that week’s workout in the side room.

The Open workouts can be grueling, but I enjoy the solidarity of watching the top CrossFit athletes suffer through the workout before I have to do it myself.

Friday Night Lights

On Fridays, from 5:30-8:30 we will be running continuous heats of the Open workout. It will be an opportunity to come together, strategize and cheer each other on while we do the workout. It’s usually a time filled with a lot of energy and a lot of fun.

Sign Up

You can sign up here for the CrossFit Open. Even if you are not a competitive athlete, you may find it helpful to officially sign up for the Open because 1) it motivates you to push a little harder on the workout, and 2) it allows you to keep a record of previous years’ performance, so you can see how much you’ve improved year to year.

GICF Intramural Open

Whether or not you officially sign up for the open, everyone at the gym will be involved in the Goose Island CrossFit Intramural Open. This year John Huggett and Sara Schoenfisch will serve as team captains for our fantasy style, in house competition.

The Intramural Open will reward several categories in addition to overall ranking (including personal PRs and newly acquired movements), so that you can contribute to your team whether you’re brand new or you’re a competitive athlete.

At the end of the Open, there will be individual awards such as “Spirit of the Open” and “Team MVP.”

The victorious team will the right to design and be honored on the next run of GICF shirts.
