What is CrossFit Kids
CrossFit Kids is different from our CrossFit program. It is a program specifically designed for kids that emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.
CrossFit Kids is meant to be BIG fun for all ages. Broad-Inclusive-General fun. Fun means we provide an active alternative to sedentary pursuits, which means less childhood obesity and all-around better health for our children.
When do classes meet?
CrossFit Kids classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday f
· 5-9 year olds meet from 4:30pm-5:00pm
· 10-12 year olds meet from 5:00pm-5:30pm
· 13-17 year olds meet from 4:30pm-5:30pm
Will my kids lift weights?
For the youngest two age groups, the answer is NO. Sometimes, we will give them a light implement (2-5lb medicine ball or dumbbell) to reinforce proper positions. We believe that if you expect your kids to pick up their backpacks, they should be able to do so with good form. With that said, we will not weight train children.
As the children hit puberty (generally ages 12-14), we will introduce a weight training program as it is appropriate for the child’s age and development. We have to understand that a 13 year old freshman should train differently than a 17 year old senior. It is likely that new clients, on the younger end of the spectrum, will not touch weights for a few months as they begin the program.
What will the kids do in class?
This is dependant on age group. As a primary focus, the Goose Island CrossFit Kids program will seek to increase your child’s general physical preparedness by utilizing body weight movements, balance training, gymnastics, and games to keep them engaged and interested in fitness.
As a general rule, all the classes will be divided into sections. For instance, we would start by warming up, and then transition to learning a skill (e.g. air squats), perform a short workout, and finish with a game.
As the age groups get older, we will begin to introduce some weighted movements to the class. As a general rule, we will not introduce weighted movements (with bars) until the kids reach puberty.
